STEAM Studio
Powered by Liberty IT in Partnership with Galway City Museum
What is STEAM Studio at Galway City Museum?
STEAM Studio is an exciting collaboration between Liberty IT and Galway City Museum that brings STEAM learning to Junior Cycle students. During this free four-hour workshop, students explore Galway’s rich maritime heritage while becoming digital makers by designing, coding, and creating their own arcade game inspired by the traditional Galway Hooker boat.
Guided by experienced IT facilitators and museum educators, supported by Liberty IT ambassadors, students develop coding, problem-solving and teamwork skills while discovering how technology, creativity, and heritage can work together.
STEAM Studio is about more than learning to code. It encourages curiosity, creativity, and innovation, helping students make meaningful connections between Galway’s past and the technologies shaping its future.
What does STEAM stand for?
STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Maths. By combining the Arts with STEM subjects, STEAM encourages creativity, critical thinking, and innovation alongside technical skills, giving students new ways to explore ideas, solve problems and express themselves.
Why does STEAM Matter?
STEAM education equips young people with the skills needed in an increasingly digital world. By integrating creativity with science and technology, students gain confidence in experimentation, collaboration and creative problem solving while developing practical digital skills.
Who is the programme for?
The programme has been specially developed for Junior Cycle students. No previous coding experience is required, and activities are tailored to accommodate a wide range of abilities and experience levels, making the workshop accessible to all participating schools.
How much does it cost?
The programme is FREE for secondary schools across Galway city and county. To ensure that travel costs are not a barrier to participation, Liberty IT will cover the cost of the bus hire or boat transport for schools travelling from the islands.
