The University Choir of Sewanee – The University of the South

May 28 @ 3:00 pm - 3:30 pm UTC+0

The University Choir has played an important role in the musical life of the University and All Saints’ Chapel since the laying of the cornerstone for the University of the South in 1860. The University Choir is directed by Geoffrey Harris Ward and composed of 50 dedicated undergraduates representing a wide range of backgrounds, majors, and interests. The University Choir sings at weekly services in All Saints’ Chapel, regular events, songs, and a variety of concerts throughout the academic year including the annual Festival Service of Lessons and Carols. This reflective and festive worship service attracts as many as 3,000 people to campus each year and is a signature event at the University.

The University Choir is also an active touring ensemble and has performed extensively throughout the United States and Canada. Since 1979, the choir has made more than 10 tours of England, singing evensong in more than 20 cathedrals and abbey churches. The choir is pleased to tour Southern Ireland in 2024.

Choir membership is open to any student. Members are from many countries, have majors and minors across all academic disciplines, have a rich diversity of spiritual traditions, have different levels of musical experience, and enjoy interests as diverse as you can imagine. The University Choir is supported by the Vial Comer Choral Scholarships. These awards attract students of great musical talent who wish to be an integral part of an outstanding choral experience at Sewanee, across the United States, and around the world.

Find more information on Sewanee Choir and have a listen to them perform on YouTube (@SweaneeChoir).

This 30-minute cappella recital (x 40 students) will take place in the Museum Courtyard if the weather permits otherwise it will be indoors on the ground floor gallery at Galway City Museum.  Come along and enjoy!
