MUSEUM LATES: Music, Talk & New Exhibitions

Galway City Council’s Museum Lates is part of Galway’s Night-Time Economy Programme. The initiative extends Museum opening hours on the last Thursday of every month from June to December 2026, with a free programme of immersive performances, talks, workshops and events taking place between 5pm and 9pm.
Funded through the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport’s After Hours at the Museum scheme, with support from Galway City Council, Museum Lates contributes to a thriving, diverse and accessible evening cultural offering in the heart of the city. The initiative also strengthens Galway’s tourism appeal by extending cultural activity into the evening, encouraging visitors to spend more time in the city centre and experience Galway’s heritage and creativity after dark.
Museum Lates offers a unique opportunity to explore the Museum’s collections and exhibitions outside regular opening hours while enjoying live music, engaging talks, creative workshops and community events in an exciting evening setting.
Irish Stick Fighting with Nathan Featherstone from 6pm – 7:30pm
Nathan Featherstone is a leading expert in Irish martial arts and the only person currently teaching two surviving styles of bataireacht (Irish stick fighting): Antrim Bata and Doyle Bata. He is also a founding member of the Irish Collar and Elbow Federation, which promotes and preserves Ireland’s indigenous wrestling tradition. A dedicated historian and researcher, Nathan has spent years studying Ireland’s martial heritage. He also holds black belts and advanced ranks in several other martial arts, bringing a broad and informed perspective to the study and revival of Ireland’s rich martial traditions.
Join Nathan Featherstone for a hands-on introduction to bataireacht, the traditional Irish art of stick fighting. This practical workshop will introduce participants to the history, principles, and fundamental techniques of the art in a safe and engaging environment. Following the workshop, Nathan will deliver a talk exploring the history and cultural significance of Irish stick fighting, before concluding with an open question-and-answer session.
Music by Jimmy Penguin from 7pm – 8.30pm
Electronic music artist specialising in turntables, custom records and synthesizers, Jimmy is the founder of Community Skratch, the worldwide turntablist collective, and an ambassador for turntablism in Ireland and around the world. A constant fixture of the Irish underground electronic music scene, he has amassed countless album, production and mastering credits across a range of musical aliases and bands, while earning multiple titles in international turntablist battles. He has had a lasting influence on skratch music and experimental electronic performance.
For this performance, Jimmy will use Perfect KO, the vinyl instrument he spent a decade developing before its release on Cut & Paste Records. Built specifically for turntables, Perfect KO allows him to create complete musical compositions live using turntables. This performance will focus on showcasing the creative possibilities of Perfect KO.
