Heraldic chimney piece, 1641 which displays the arms of the Martin or Martyn family, one of the fourteen so-called ‘Tribes of Galway’. The arms feature a Calvary cross between a shining sun and crescent moon. Although this grey stone fragment may appear drab, heraldic chimney pieces such as this would have originally been painted with the colours of the family arms – in this case, a blue shield with a silver cross.
