Agnes Browne Chalice 1640
Silver chalice with deep bowl, everted rim, globular knop, octagonal stem and hexafoil foot with incurved facets.
The bowl is plain whilst the knop is chased with six lobes above and below a horizontal floral band. The stem has horizontal mouldings and one facet of the foot has a simple engraved crucifixion on an unconventional stepped calvary.
Composite chalice with repairs and replaced bowl.
Maker’s mark: IP (2 times underneath foot) possibly for John Phillips, Dublin.
MF (on bowl) for Mark Fallon, Galway.
Inscription (1): ‘Pray for Agnes Browne’ 1640 (added).
Inscription (2): ‘Pertinet Ad Monast. Jesu et Maria O.P. Galviae
