We are delighted to share with you news of a new Community Exhibition, ‘The Aran Knitting Project’ now displayed in the multi-purpose Education Room at Galway City Museum. The exhibition showcases the Aran Knitting workshop series that took place recently in Galway City Library.
Experienced knitters were taught a series of traditional Aran stitches in a group environment. The purpose of the workshops was to teach Aran Knitting as a living skill, and to build a community of knitters who could in turn share their new skills with others.
The participants used wool dyed and spun in Ireland, to create new artworks such as headbands and scarves comprising the traditional stitches. All photographs in the exhibition were created specifically for this project and this is their first public display.
The project was funded by Galway City Council, Creative Ireland, the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, and Age Friendly Galway. The exhibition will run from November 2023 until the end of January 2024.
