It’s Competition Time!

Inspired by our new exhibition The Corrib: Myth, Legend and Folklore, we are inviting 3rd to 6th class pupils to research a tale from their locality, to retell it, and illustrate it.

Have you seen Galway City Museum’s new exhibition The Corrib: Myth, Legend and Folklore yet? Beautifully illustrated by artist Sadie Cramer, the exhibition explores some of the tales associated with the River Corrib and Galway Bay. It presents a selection of such stories from banshees to mermaids to human seals. Each one full of intrigue and uniquely marked with the Galway stamp!

Ireland is steeped in myth, legend and folklore, and every corner of the island has its own stories of great warriors, fierce giants, troublesome fairies, enchanted animals and otherworldly phantoms. Galway is no different and its stories no less colourful! For this competition Pupils from 3rd to 6th class are being asked to do their research and to discover the colourful folklore that surrounds their own hometown.

Pupils can also look up the School’s Collection of the Irish Folklore Commission at www.duchas.ie. Which holds a treasury of folklore compiled by Irish pupils from 5,000 primary schools between the years 1937 and 1939.

This competition has some incredible prizes! First prize is a mini exhibition on The Corrib: Myth, Legend and Folklore featuring ten beautifully-illustrated lightweight panels for display in the school. The second prize is an art workshop for your class with illustrator Sadie Cramer (subject to government guidelines on Covid-19). The third prize is a copy of Away with the Fairies (2020) by William Henry, which contains fifty strange and amazing stories from Galway city and county.

Is that something that your child would be interested in? Here’s how they can enter: Write and illustrate your folklore story in up to 100 words and attach your name, age, class and school name.
