Galway City Museum is delighted to welcome award-winning photographer, Karen Cox for this year’s Galway International Arts Festival. The Museum are currently hosting Karen’s photographic exhibition,”Women of the Thar Desert”, documenting the lives of the women and girls of the Thar Desert in northwest India. Join Karen on Saturday 20 July, 2pm-3pm, when she will be sharing stories and images from her time in India.
In September 2022, as part of a documentary photography project, Karen Cox was commissioned to spend time in the Thar Desert in Rajasthan in northwest India to capture the lives of the women and girls of the desert. Most of the women of the Thar Desert are from the lowest castes in the Hindu social hierarchy including Dalits, previously known as ‘untouchables’, and can be victims of significant physical and sexual abuse. India remains one of the most unsafe countries in the world for women, with lower caste women – in particular – bearing the brunt and having little access to justice. Rajasthan recorded the highest number of rape cases in India in 2022 for the fourth consecutive year. Nothing is easy yet these women show incredible courage and resilience.
Karen Cox is an award-winning photographer who works both in Ireland and internationally. Her work spans documentary photography and photojournalism to record both known and untold visual narratives. Her photos have appeared in publications including The New York Times, The Guardian, Rolling Stone, Reuters among others and she continues to show her work in exhibitions globally.
