TEXTILE WORKSHOP:  Let’s Make History: What We Wore – What We Wear

December 5 @ 1:00 pm - 4:30 pm GMT
How would you know if you were on trend in seventeenth-century Galway?

Would you wear an Irish mantle and léine, risking a fine for flouting the laws governing dress? Or would you follow English fashions, as encouraged by the Crown?  Perhaps you would be tempted by fine Flemish lace and luxurious French silks arriving through Galway’s bustling port.

Join Eimear Greaney (UpSew) for a hands-on workshop exploring Galway’s rich textile history. Using traditional techniques, participants will cut and sew a half-scale replica of a seventeenth-century léine (a long shirt), while discovering what Galway’s merchants and townspeople wore and exploring the connections between fashion then and today’s fast-fashion culture.

This workshop is free and all materials are supplied. As places are limited, advance booking is essential.

To book a place, contact the Museum on (091) 532460 or email Museum@GalwayCity.ie.

Suitable for adults

This project and its associated workshops are generously supported by Galway City Council and Creative Ireland.
