NEW CPD Course for Teachers at the Museum

Object-Based Learning (OBL), Place Based Learning (PBL) and Creativity in the Museum and Classroom

Galway City Museum have teamed up with the Galway Education Support Centre to create a brand new CPD course, which they are offering to teachers this Iúil.  The course aims to give teachers the knowledge and skills to engage with Object Based Learning (OBL) – a student-centred pedagogy that uses cultural material to inspire close observation and critical thinking – and Placed Based Learning (PBL) in which the local community becomes the ‘classroom’.  By incorporating art, drama, storytelling and digital technology, the course aims to help teachers to bring the past to life for their pupils in a fun and engaging way, and in doing so improve the ability of pupils to shape their own views and perspectives on history, heritage, culture, and art.

This is the first time such a course has been offered at Galway City Museum.  Participants will combine their study of the museum objects on display with a variety of creative activities. They will work with storyteller and podcaster Rab Fulton, actor and drama facilitator Órla McGovern, visual artist Vicky Smith, and Seán Leonard of Galway on Foot tours to create their own original pieces in response to the historical objects that they have learned about. The course also includes a walking tour of Galway City.

There are still a few spaces left for the course which takes place Dé Luain 1st Iúil through until Dé hAoine 5th Iúil from 10am – 2.30pm in the Museum Education Room. The fee for the course is €50.00 and this is non-refundable except in the unlikely event that the course does not go ahead.  A light lunch is included in the fee.  Log in to the Galway Education Support Centre website to register for this course.
