WORKSHOP: Poetry as Commemoration – FULLY BOOKED!
November 12, 2022 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm UTC+0
***N.B. This event is now fully booked!***
‘Poetry as Commemoration’ uses poetry as a means to deepen our collective understanding of Ireland’s past and to explore the challenging period in our history relating to the War of Independence, 1919 to 1921, and Civil War, 1922 to 1923. As part of this all-island project, the award-winning Galway-based, poet Gerry Hanberry will facilitate two workshops at Galway City Museum, using objects on display in its Revolution in Galway, 1913–23 exhibition as creative prompts. Responding to the objects, participants will be guided to write their own poem or piece of prose, which will be archived for future generations.
These events are free of charge but places are limited so advance booking is essential. Please note that participants must be available to attend both Saturdays. To make a booking please contact the Museum on (091) 532460 or museum@galwaycity.ie
‘Poetry as Commemoration’ is an initiative of the Irish Poetry Reading Archive at UCD Library and supported by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport & Media under the Decade of Centenaries programme. In partnership with Poetry Ireland, ‘Poetry as Commemoration’ will coordinate a series of creative writing workshops in schools across the island. Creative writing and other forms of creative expression will be collected and archived in UCD Special Collections to provide future generations with a snapshot of how the centenary of these wars was marked in 2022-2023.This is a fun and inclusive way to engage the community in ongoing commemorations. Participants will leave the workshops with an insight into particular events that took place in their locale 100 years ago and, under the direction of an experienced writer, will engage creatively with the historical moment. No prior knowledge or experience necessary. For further details about the project visit poetryascommemoration.ie
