MUSEUM LATES: Lúan and ‘Letters to Ireland’

June 25 @ 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm IST
Museum galleries come alive after hours with immersive performances that transform the Museum space, creating a unique sensory experience where music and history intersect in unexpected and memorable ways.

From 6pm, music from Lúan will fill the ground floor galleries. Lúan (Lúan de Búrca) is a folk musician based in Galway City who mixes traditional influences with a rock and metal background.

At 7pm in the Education Room visitors can experience Letters to Ireland – the Emigrant Experience in Their Own Words, a powerful performance drawing on a remarkable archive of thousands of surviving letters written by Irish emigrants to America across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. How did they write home about their experience in a new country? From social life to the world of work, memories of Ireland, and milestones in America, Letters to Ireland offers a remarkable insight into the thoughts and voices of those who left home but kept their ties to Ireland alive. This performance is part of the University of Galway’s IMIRCE collection, a remarkable digital collection of Irish emigrant letters and memoirs from North America.

During these extended opening hours, visitors will be able to enjoy the museum’s rich and diverse exhibitions, spanning history, culture, and science, including Surrounded by Stone, Keepers of the Gael, Revolution in Galway, The Claddagh, Galway Hooker, Earth Action, Sea Science, and Superhuman.

Running the last Thursday of the month from 5pm to 9pm, Museum Lates invites the public to explore Galway City Museum’s exhibitions after hours while enjoying immersive musical performances talks, workshops, performances, and community events. Funded by the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport ‘After Hours at the Museum’ scheme and Galway City Council.
