Galway was founded 900 years ago this year, when – in 1124 – Tairdelbach Ua Conchobair (Turlough O’Conor, 1088–1156), king of Connacht and high-king of Ireland, commanded the construction of a stronghold at the mouth of the Galway River (today, the River Corrib) on the southern edge of his Connacht kingdom. Described in the annals as a dún or caisleán, both defensive structures, it guarded an important river crossing and access to Loch Orbson (today, Lough Corrib), and served as a base for his fleet of ships. The strategic base became a target for his rivals and the annals record that it was destroyed and rebuilt on several occasions. It eventually fell into the hands of the Anglo-Norman de Burghs in 1232.

To mark the 900th anniversary of the founding of Gaelic Galway, join Dr Kieran O’Conor of the University of Galway as he discusses the life, times, and legacies of its founder, Tairdelbach Ua Conchobair.
