Galway was founded 900 years ago this year, when – in 1124 – Tairdelbach Ua Conchobair (Turlough O’Conor, 1088–1156), king of Connacht and high-king of Ireland, commanded the construction of a stronghold at the mouth of the Galway River (today, the River Corrib) on the southern edge of his Connacht kingdom. Described in the annals as a dún or caisleán, both defensive structures, it guarded an important river crossing and access to Loch Orbson (today, Lough Corrib), and served as a base for his fleet of ships. The strategic base became a target for his rivals and the annals record that it was destroyed and rebuilt on several occasions. It eventually fell into the hands of the Anglo-Norman de Burghs in 1232.
