Guided Tours

Guided tours of the museum can be arranged and are free of charge (although a contribution to our donations box would be appreciated). Please note that all guided tours must be booked in advance and are subject to the availability of staff.

General Tour (45-60 minutes)
Our general tour is designed to give an introduction to the museum and its environs, and an overview of the current exhibitions, focussing on a number of key objects in the collection. We greatly encourage questions and interaction during our tours.

Short Tour (20 minutes)
Our introductory tour is designed to give a background to the museum and its environs, and an introduction to the current exhibitions.

Tailored Tour (30 minutes)
Looking for something else? With advance notice, a theme-specific or exhibition-specific tour may be arranged. Please feel free to contact us with your ideas.

Schools, please note the following:

  • You should bring at least one adult per 15-20 students
  • Large classes should be divided into smaller groups for tours (generally <20 per tour)
  • Teacher/leader must remain with each group at all times and are responsible for their behaviour
  • We do not have a lunch room and food/drink is not permitted in the galleries. There is, however, an open courtyard next to the Spanish Arch that may be used during good weather
  • Students should bring as little baggage as possible

Self-Guided Visits

Groups can also enjoy the museum without booking a tour but please let us know you are visiting.

Galway City museum has developed a number of activities to engage younger visitors. Our activity and colouring sheets are available from reception. Drawing and colouring pencils can be borrowed from reception.

Activity Sheets

These activity sheets, in English and Irish, may be used in conjunction with your museum visit. Click on the buttons below to download and print the designed materials.

Based on our exhibitions, these colouring sheets were developed with art student, Bláithín Kelly, for younger visitors. Click on the button below to download and print the colouring sheets.

The Museum Explorers Activity Trail for the ‘Keepers of the Gael’ exhibition is now available in hardcopy from reception. Aimed at ages 8+ or 3rd-6th classes, explorers need to find and follow the trees numbered 1 to 14, working together with parents/guardians/teachers to find the answers. You’ll need to search, look, draw, imagine, make sounds and even pull faces to complete the trail.
