Altar Frontal, Dominican Order, Galway

From our Dominican collection, an altar frontal embroidered by Sr. Margaret Joyce, completed May 1726. This frontal was used by the Dominican Sisters at the Slate Nunnery, Kirwan’s Lane, Galway. The piece depicts the Virgin Mary with Jesus on her lap, flanked by St Dominic and St Catherine. Along the outer edges are many birds and animals drawn from Biblical stories.
